American King by Sierra Simone

5.0

This series is going to be etched into my heart and flowing through my veins for the rest of my days tbh. Words truly can't describe how much I love this story. American King was an excellent conclusion to the New Camelot series. Where do I even begin?

Ash has been the strongest force in the series. Greer and Embry's hearts are bound to Ash and their love for him is what brings them together. Despite being the most pivotal character in these books, Ash has remained shrouded in mystery, and his layers are slowly peeled back in book 1 and 2. In American King, we finally experience Ash's POV; we grow to understand Ash deeply and watch him develop over half a lifetime. Ash isn't a bad guy, but he has made some...questionable choices in the previous books. Some were intentional, and some actions were committed in ignorance. He is a noble leader and hero to the United States, and he is a devoted lover...but there is darkness in his past. Ash is an incredibly complex man and I can't help but love him so much. I love seeing such a powerful and dominant man express moments of intense vulnerability and compassion for his loved ones, especially toward Greer and Embry. He would do anything for his lovers (which he does) and he treats them with so much love and warmth. There are small bits of Embry and Greer's POVs in American King, but this book focuses on Ash's experience. I love learning more and more about the characters, their relationships, and this alternate world in each POV and flashback.

Sierra Simone's prose is outstanding as usual. I took my sweet time reading this book because I didn't want this series to end, but also because I wanted to fully absorb every word. Her writing is poetic and beautiful. The way she writes sex and kink is beautiful. I could literally write an entire dissertation on how gorgeous her writing is.

To be honest, this series is FILLED with angst, which I loved, but it was a lot for me to process emotionally at times. I sped through American Queen and American Prince, but my heart couldn't handle all of the angst in American King and I needed to take breaks. The whole series was an emotional rollercoaster, but American King destroyed me the most. I accidentally spoiled some major events for myself, and even though I knew what was coming, I was still flooded with emotions. I still loved the angst so much though.

I'll never forget this series. I think New Camelot will be living rent-free in my head for a very long time. I will 10000% be re-reading at some point because this has become one of my favorite series of all time. And to think that I usually don't like poly romances LOL. Sierra Simone you are the best!
