Gin Tama, Vol. 6 by Hideaki Sorachi

Yessss there is so much metaplot in this! The Tendoushuu are named and introduced! The Shinsengumi's relationship with the Bakufu! Matsudaira bursts onto the stage! And Okita goes to the Yorozuya to have Gintoki solve a problem he is prohibited from. All very interesting stuff.

Also the whole thing with Oshou fighting as Gidoumaru to raise money for his adopted kids is pretty intense and emotional and is the very first time we see a hint of Gintoki's reaction to children and mentor-figures. (It's very well repressed but Sorachi certainly put something in there already.)

It's the first time the Shinsengumi and the Yorozuya really team up, and the whole thing is pretty magnificent.

Then there's a Sacchan and lot of random food poisoning and... Elizabeth dating a nurse and... just. Gintama being Gintama. But even the bear with a mushroom on its head has a tragic backstory, and so it goes from comedy to tears before you're quite aware what's even happening.

Favorite random panel: Kagura in her pjs and bedhead rushing in to wake up Gin-chan, with Shinpachi trying to stop her (because Gin-chan is currently covered in Sacchan) and they look so much like siblings!
