I love graphic memoirs, autobiographies, and fiction inspired by them, and this book was no exception. I loved learning about Stephanie St. Clair and the Harlem Renaissance. The authors did a great job telling these stories without coming across as didactic. My only complaint is that some of the panels were a bit hard to follow in terms of what was happening in them, and I read graphic novels pretty frequently. I could have done without the graphic depictions of violence, especially of the murder of one of my favorite characters . But that says more about my personal reading preferences than the quality of the book. Overall a quick, intense, and imsightful read that sent me down a Wikipedia rabbit hole in search of more information. Highly recommend!
Graphic: Torture, Death of parent, Murder, Colonisation, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexism, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, and Toxic relationship
