Death in Her Hands by Ottessa Moshfegh

It's weird I didn't write down any quotes from this one because it has absolutely stuck with me. I felt trapped in the main character's brain. In her, I saw myself at my loneliest and most paranoid, which is to say I saw my mother. If you know me at my worst, or have heard stories about my mom, you know exactly what I'm talking about--so have fun, and get yourself a journal ready for processing all the weird stuff that might come up for you as you make your way through the story!

Another thing I should mention is I'm almost always going to complain if something happens to an animal because it's almost always done as a last-ditch, cheap attempt to do something/anything interesting toward the end of a story. Not so much here (though it's also arguably ambiguous whether anything happened to the dog). Despite this, the main character's feelings re: what might be happening to the dog really served to amplify those feelings I allude to above--and does so in a really beautiful/terrifying/horrific way! Not cheap!

Side note: Pretty sure I sought this out because of a meme I saw on Sad Book Memes (https://www.instagram.com/sadbookmemes).
