« It’s not always enough to go looking for the place we belong. » Jamie said, his eyes on the house ahead. « Sometimes we need to make that place. »

A sweet, heartwarming and lighthearted low fantasy book! I needed something along those lines to read between two heavier fantasy sagas, and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches delivered. We follow Mika Moon, a witch-turned-influencer-turned-tutor in her mission to teach three young witches prone to disasters, and tries to integrate into the peculiar household of Nowhere House.

I absolutely loved the cast of characters; they were all so lovable and made such a cute found family. Though I must admit I had a little soft spot for Ian and his colorful shenanigans. Honorable mention for the diversity of the ensemble as well, I wasn’t expecting to find some POC and queer representation in the book, but it made it only more enjoyable for me. I was interested in the plot, but the characters truly kept me engaged in the story; including the developments between sunshine Mika and the grumpy Irish librarian, Jamie (that’s how a friend of mine introduced the book to me, I was immediately sold and wasn’t disappointed in that regard). Also, I didn’t expect to laugh, but the banter and accidents were on spot! Between all this lightheartedness and coziness, the story does dig into deeper topics; what is a home? what does belonging somewhere mean? The conclusion is pretty nice: it’s as much a place as the people that live there.

If you’re looking for a witchy, low-stakes and cozy reading, this might be what you need. As for me, it was a nice way to start 2025 🤍
