in the past if anyone asked me who my favourite author was i would list a few who i enjoyed the books of but with daphne du maurier i feel like the more i read from her, the more i love and understand what it feels like to actually have a favourite author, alongside jane austen, of course. from what i’ve read so far, she’s able to have range with the topics and genres that she covers in her novels. she can write from the perspective of both men and women and have it feel realistic. all the characters are flawed, including side characters but they remain loveable (or likeable in a sense where you can’t get enough of them)
the premise of this one in particular is exactly my sort of story. doppelgängers switching place? the character we are following realising he can puppeteer those around him as they are no concern or relation to him while he picks up the shattered pieces of his doppelgängers escaped life. there’s so much mystery and darkness to uncover as the reader is also just as clueless as the character we are following. i highly recommend.
