The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

3.0

There are a lot of things I loved about this book. I was super excited and preordered a long time ago and then bumped right to the top of my list! And I fully intend to do that with the next book too - can’t wait for Quan’s book!!!

However - for me there was one thing that really dropped this from a 4 star read to a 3 star read. And that’s how long Esme waited to tell Khai about Jade. This may just be my own thing - lots of romance readers have tropes they love and those they hate and for me secret baby/kid is something that very rarely works for me. I understand why Esme didn’t lead with it but I don’t think it’s ok how long she waited.

Khai showed her in every way but the words that he loved her. She couldn’t accept that. Was even willing to fake marry his brother all because he couldn’t say “I love you” - but when she doesn’t mention her daughter UNTIL THE WEDDING - that was fine? For me - the way she handled that situation brought this down from a book I loved to a book I liked.

Also - what was up with the constant mentions of Khai’s wealth? And how did that pay off? Was it just again to prove to us that Esme loves him for himself and not the money? I think it was unnecessary.

My very favorite part was the phone call when Quan and Khai called Michael after Khai’s first night spent with Esme. I love the friendship/love between the guys. I love the ways they support Khai. I love how well Quan communicates and can’t wait to see how that plays out in his story!!
