I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad by Souad Mekhennet

5.0

I read this book because I wanted to understand what is going on in the terrorist world today. I have not kept up with it closely since 9/11 and now it is being used as a basis for broad discrimination, which is a problem that I want to stand against.

I got what I was looking for. The book covers the facts in a way that is easy to absorb. It's painful emotionally, but it's not hard to follow.

This book condemns terrorism and tries to help end it by understanding it. If we want to stop it, we need to understand what factors have led to it. Why would anyone want to be a terrorist? What drives them to it? Have you ever considered that people in foreign counties might hold Americans responsible for our government's actions even more than other countries because our country is a democracy?

The author is a Muslim woman with an ethnic and religious background that uniquely qualified her to pursue these stories, and she did so heroically, risking her life more than one time. Her goal was to narrow the gap so that we can see across and begin to narrow the divide.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to help make peace in the world.
