Sister of My Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

4.0

This is the story of two girls raised in the same house by their two widowed mothers and a spinster aunt, as if they were twin sisters. While the mothers are rivals for their positions in life and whose daughter is the smartest, prettiest, most obedient, can fetch the best husband, etc., the girls never let it touch their tight relationship. However, when both girls have found arranged matches, cracks begin to splinter across each of their lives and between them.

This story was woven so beautifully, taking us across India and to the United States and back. There was both a strong sense of place and character in this novel, with the added addition of beautiful prose. I fell in love with Divakaruni's writing in college and was glad to return to it with Sister of My Heart.
