Butter Honey Pig Bread by francesca ekwuyasi

Food!! When I read that this story had vivid description of food, I just had to give myself the chance to experience it. Francesca's vivid description of all those mouth-watering dishes reminded me of some happy moments I’ve had with my mum growing up when she taught me how to prepare some Ghanaian dishes.

Subtly, she weaves into the story the subject of unhealthy eating habits which was very relatable, and through the characters, we get to know the impact that loss and grief have on the lives of those close to us and ourselves.

Francesca’s writing style was amazing. She dealt with the themes pretty well and gave us deep insights into loneliness, grief, and spirituality (I was very interested in this) through the characters. The other themes explored which I think were perfectly utilized were self-loathe/body hate, family, sisterhood, motherhood, and depression.

Every chapter in this book will leave you smiling just as it made me. I loved how everything came to play in part 4. It was so refreshing and I shed lots of tears because I’m that emotional. I smiled at Wolfie and Kehinde, and at Banji and Kambi’s honeymoon. Ugh! It was so beautiful. I admired Timi and Taiye’s friendship as well.

I could go on and on but that would result in spoilers.

Is it an easy read? Yes and Nope. Will I recommend it to anybody? Absolutely yes! If I loved it, you will love it as well. Did I convince you enough?
