description

I picked this book up totally on a whim and I realized that I had a totally different idea in my head of what this book was. For some reason, I thought it would be like a YA Outlander of sorts and was a time travel romance story? Let's just say I was completely wrong.

This novel follows a 17-year-old girl named Audrey Rose who attempts to solve the case of Jack the Ripper with the help of her handsome and witty companion, Thomas Cresswell — all while society shames her for being a lady who likes science. ⁣

This actually turned out to be one of my favorite books that I read in April. It is set in the late 1800's, which I'm absolute sucker for, and I adored the romance. The writing is good and Maniscalco's horrific descriptions of dead bodies and murders were and amazing addition that definitely sets her apart in the YA world. ⁣

My only issue with this book was the plot twist. I saw it coming from about 100 miles away. I honestly just wish that she had done something revolutionary with the twist. I'm always hoping YA mystery authors will surprise me with their unexpected culprits, but I'm almost always disappointed. (btw, if you have any YA recs with incredible plot twists let me know) ⁣

All in all: great characters, great world building, lovely setting — shitty ending. But, I'm honestly so excited to dive into Hunting for Prince Dracula, so lets hope that one ends a little better 🤞🏻⁣
