I am surprised I sorta(?) liked this story. I was very apprehensive about even starting it because I didn't like Vasili in the first book. Even with him making an effort to be a true asshole in the first half, I never quite warmed to him tbh. Though I did like him as far as his friendship with Stefan went. So, I guess there was something redeemable about him.

Even so, when the book opened I began the tedious treck through FIVE whole chapters before finally getting to meet the heroine Alexandra, known simply as Alex. That was rather frustrating, if I'm honest, having to wait that long to get in her head for the first impression. But alas... I want to say I liked Alex, and to a degree that was true. Saying otherwise would make me a hypocrite for claiming I liked Tanya for most of her book.

But Alex was a bit harder to like. She was strong, intelligent, independent and very willful. Now, I love a strong independent heroine, especially in historicals, but when it played a part in her relationship with Vasili I grew very tired of it. Then again, the same can be said for Vasili too.

I actually did like Alex, even if I'm disappointed by the ultimate evolution her character takes by the end of the book. I wasn't surprised, but I was more or less disappointed. Aren't I always?
