Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

5.0

I am more or less completely unfamiliar with Discworld. I have a vague understanding of the world building (or possibly more accurately, the world stacking) but other than that, I didn't really know all that much going into this novel, which is labeled as the twentieth in the series.

It looks like I have missed out on quite an entertaining series and I'm going to have to go back and correct this oversight on my part.

For a novel so late in the run, it feels very self contained. I was not lost jumping in at this point. Part of that is probably due to major parts of the story revolving around a version of Santa and the Grim Reaper's attempt to fill in when events leave the gift giver unable to function. But also, the original characters aren't weighed down by huge mounts of backstory. They may have a history (which I'm sure I'll discover eventually), but they don't drift into long expositions of everything that happened to get them to where we meet them.

Over all, a very funny and entertaining read. One I'll probably re-read again as I make my way though the series.
