Suspensful and atmospheric magical realism in a twilight zone sorta way. Unease but intelligent and gothic instead of rushed and gory. Modern setting that easily slips between a semi-timeless vibe of something like Haunting of Hill House mixed with the nostalgia of something like Stranger Things.
Like Haunting of Hill House, the house itself is a character of sorts. You're right with the main character in that creeping sense that something is off. You root for her friends to be the people she sees and not the people you fear they might be underneath.
The book asks big questions about whether nostalgia is helpful or toxic. Makes you think about how media shapes us, the motivations of people who say they want the best for you, and what it takes to embrace your authentic self. Something i want to hand to a bunch of friends to get their reaction.
