Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

5.0

This semi-autobiographical book is really one of a kind.
I finished this book in 2 days, it had me hooked. Reading about the insights of living in an extremely religious community who shun anything considered 'sinful' was unlike anything I have ever read. To read about Jannette's coming of age and fighting against the conventional beliefs associated with her communities religion was so empowering. It showed how hard the choice is to walk away from the community in order to fulfil a life that is satisfactory (her being a lesbian) while not completely turning your back on god even when your religious community turn their back on you.
I just loved this book, the way it tied in other stories, linked to religion and gave an insight into conventical religious lives that I have never read about before.
What an amazing read, really one in a million.
