No Roses for Harry! by Gene Zion

4.0

This is one that I remember Mom reading to us as kids. I fell in love with the mischievous Harry. First published the year my mom was born, it's now a classic picture book that kids can still relate to today (especially with the continued trend of dressing dogs *cue bewildered head shaking*). As I've grown up, it is one of those books that I remember fondly and delight when I find it in my library to recommend to parents looking for books to read with their little ones (along with [b:Caps for Sale|775597|Caps for Sale|Esphyr Slobodkina|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348541342s/775597.jpg|954532], [b:Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel|153542|Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel|Virginia Lee Burton|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349044993s/153542.jpg|1069773], and [b:Are You My Mother?|197084|Are You My Mother?|P.D. Harry the Dog is dismayed when his birthday present from Grandma turns out to be a truly hideous green sweater covered in orange-ish roses. He immediately resolves to do anything he can to get rid of it, to no avail, as it simply refuses to be lost. I love the final resolution, the cute little bird picking up a trailing string from the sweater and turning the unraveled sweater into a lovely nest.

This one is great for young children with its simple story and illustrations. As a bonus, it's part of a series, so if they want to read more about Harry, they have three more books to choose from: [b:Harry the Dirty Dog|857448|Harry the Dirty Dog|Gene Zion|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348901453s/857448.jpg|368224], [b:Harry and the Lady Next Door|812442|Harry and the Lady Next Door |Gene Zion|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348874945s/812442.jpg|1368514], and [b:Harry by the Sea|1037190|Harry by the Sea|Gene Zion|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1347246444s/1037190.jpg|881853].
