His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

5.0

This was an epic book. At first the structure was pretty much "something happens" and then: "something happens" and next: "something happens". And according to what Pullman himself has said about writing intuitively without a premeditated structure, this might well be the cause. However, as the three parts progress, Pullman manages to connect everything to everything and a grand epic story emerges. A thrilling read, exciting on the surface and full of deep symbolism.
One gripe: if you read the edition I have, do not, I repeat, do not read the introduction. I read just a few pages of it and it contains spoilers for most of the book. It's clearly written for people who have read the book and are ready for some background to the story. It should properly have been an afterword, rather than an introduction.
