Academy of Monsters by Madeline Fay, Jenee Robinson

2.0

I always feel horrible when I rate a book this low, but also believe it could have been better. Normally I can look pass some grammar/mechanical issues in stories. If the actual plot and the characters are flowing well, it's easy to disregard mistakes and enjoy the story. I think this had amazing potential. I also have a weakness for monster stories.

The authors need to send this to an editor, than beta readers, and then do another edit. There were just too many mistakes that it made it impossible to overlook. I also think in general we should've had a better introduction to our characters. It went zero to a hundred. This is meant to be a series, so book one should be a build up. World building doesn't matter much for this series I think. What we needed is clear distinctions of who the characters were.

In my opinion Watt and Matthias are basically the same. They have the same personality. Thorn and Jr. also share similarities. We have Vex who's also a little different, but like the former four, he's instantly obsessed.

If I were the Beta reader, I'd suggest that the authors spend more time developing the personalities of those five. I also think this story would've been more addicting if they 'faked' their dislike for her, but still demonstrated attraction. Vex was meant to hate her, the fact that he gave up on that hate because she's a pretty face was pretty lame. I think in general all the males gave up because she's attractive. That's too superficial for my taste.
