Empire of the Vampire (EotV) is a dark epic fantasy story set in a world similar to Western Europe during the Middle Ages. The world is inhabited by vampires who are free to roam since Daysdeath, an event that shrouded the Sun. The main character, Gabriel de Leon, is a member of the Silversaints, a monastic order, and his mission is to fight vampires. The story begins with Gabriel in a prison cell awaiting execution for his role in killing a mighty vampire, the Forever King. To avoid his fate, he is forced to recount his life story to a vampire historian.
EotV has been generating a lot of buzz, and it's not difficult to see why. From the opening lines, the book is captivating, with a great hook that draws the reader in. The atmosphere is gloomy, eerie, ominous, vulgar, and dark, making it difficult to put down. And, of course, there are vampires, one of my favorite elements.
One of the things that I particularly admire is Kristoff's talent for creating such a vivid world. His world-building is immaculate, and his characters come to life with remarkable clarity. They are vulgar, yet still likable and funny, and the art prints of Bon Orthwick are simply breathtaking. Kristoff's light sarcastic tone makes even the most depressing parts bearable, but be warned – this book will make you feel things. I couldn't help but be moved by the heartbreak that unfolded. While I don't typically cry when reading books, I came close to tears with this one. I'm eagerly anticipating the release of part two! F my face what an epic story.
