Little Mermaid and Other Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen

3.0

I rated these stories individually to get the star rating: 2.90

Short summary of my review: I am partial to most of the stories and loved a couple. There were some hints of the Christian allegory and I did not like it at all. These are fairytales. Stop bringing God into it. It's better to do selective reading when it comes to fairytale collections. Some stories went longer than it should've and are boring.

On the side note, I love all the illustrations. They are beautiful and amazing. I loved the interactive one on Thumbelina, the flower.

The Little Mermaid
They were six beautiful children, but the youngest was the prettiest of all.... but like all the others she had no feet, and instead of legs she had a fish's tail.

Ariel had been my favorite Disney princess until I discovered Mulan, Moana, and Tiana. It has one of the best soundtracks in the Disney world and I was happy and well until I learned about the real ending about this little mermaid. There had been posts circulating a few years back about the real outcomes of the princesses if they were based from their source material. Heavens, my fifteen year old heart was mortified.

Not much was changed in the adaptation (with the exclusion of all the singing and Sebastian's pushing of the princess to the prince) other than the ending.
SpoilerOf course, our dear mermaid did not get to marry the prince and she died and turned into sea foam
What hurt the most for me here is learning that The Little Mermaid felt like she was walking on knives everytime she took a step in land. Would I ever do that for a man? No thank you. I'd rather have fish tail and stay in the depths of sea for three hundred years. Besides, what's so bad about being a mermaid? I think it would be amazing!

P.S. The prince is such a dick here. I hate him.
