The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

5.0

This book was so beautiful. It was so heartbreaking. It was romantic and not at once.

This book had me questioning so much about relationships and how we perceive them. From the very beginning when Addie is in love with a boy in a band who doesn’t know her name, where I questioned how much you can truly care for a person without them ever knowing to care back, or her fleeting connection to an actor that still felt as though it had deep roots, to her only lasting relationships with Henry, Luc, and the experience of life.

By the end I questioned who Addie loved, if anyone at all. She has a tormented, dysfunctional romance with the concept of life itself, which is countered by the development of her relationship with Luc (which I still haven’t decided whether I loved or hated but it was certainly interesting).

I adored Henry as a character, and I love the whole thing of writing the book within the book, but I didn’t truly believe that he and Addie loved one another. It’s more that they were in a situation where they could only be with each other, the only people who could know or understand them were each other. I think maybe there was love there, but they weren’t in love, or perhaps they were depending on your interpretation.

This is a great read and a moral dilemma the whole way through. I’m so glad I read this. If you feel like an existential crisis, read this. I sat in silence for about ten minutes after finishing just thinking ‘Holy shit, what the actual fuck’ - so enjoy!!!
