Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State by Samuel Stein

informative inspiring fast-paced

3.75

This book is an absolute must read for anyone looking to become an Urban Planner. It illustrates in quite clear terms what the problems with modern planning is today, its links to gentrification, and what we can do to combat these tendencies. The chapter Unmasking the Real Estate State had great suggestions and really inspired me to be more radical in my approach to planning. I will say that while most of the book is very insightful, I found the chapter on Donald Trump and his family not as informative as the rest of the book. I also think that it has a far too broad of a definition of "radical," putting quite moderate Social Democrats into the same category as revolutionary socialists. Other than that however, I think it was a great read!
