Black Panther: The Battle for Wakanda by Brandon T. Snider

3.0

This is not part of the storyline set out by the 2018 movie. In this version, Klaw killed T’Chaka when T’Challa was a boy, M’Baku is a cultist leader attacking Wakanda, etc.

I did not enjoy this story as much as I did the movie. The Avengers were kind of obnoxious, and I didn’t feel like they respected T’Challa’s responsibilities as king, etc. Nick Fury was all the worst parts hinted at in the MCU version of Fury, but none of the good parts. I also didn’t care for how the book was laid out with the colored fonts for various speakers - it felt like the commitment was to that flashy layout over ease of readability or letting the story stand on its own.

For kids who want more Black Panther after the movie, this could be hit or miss. Some will love it and maybe be drawn to the comics for more stories from this version of Wakanda. Some will be disappointed that this doesn’t fit in with the awesome movie they fell in love with.
