I may be updating this after book club but this is my initial reaction.

This book was so extremely frustrating and irritating to me even as an outsider and new to the topic. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the Vietnam war and it only deepened my love for historical fiction.

I grew to love the main character, Frances, and also grew to hate my country with her.

I feel like I could have been more connected to the book and characters. I think it has to do with me not fully wanting the life she lived. I find my 5 star reads are lives that I would want to lead. There were definitely moments like her relationships with Barb and Ethel, as well as some of the men.

Spoilers: There were a bunch of predictable points, some good and some bad. Some I wish didn’t happen and one that I’m really glad did happen - Jamie surviving!!

I would not recommend this book to people prone to panic attacks because there are a lot of triggering points in this book.
