Three Apples Fell from the Sky by Narine Abgaryan

2.0

Two stars mainly because of the first half of the book, where the author gives their best to bore you to death. Based on the reviews, I prepared to read a wholesome story about life in a small village. Instead I got generations' worth of trauma (frankly which we all have as it is, so why get an extra portion?). The only worse about the absence of plot was the style it was written, I feel like my grandpa could have told the story better because at least:
1)I would have been invested in hearing his stories because he was likeable. In this book you don't get introduced to one or two main characters at first but the author just randomly throws a bunch of difficult to remember - but ohw so funny because they once did this or that and now their family name shall be baseball hat- named people's suffering right at you.
2)He wouldn't go into so much detail about each everyday activity such as cleaning, gardening or cooking.

The second half of the book was somewhat better, because you finally meet the characters and see them through their actions and as people, not just part of a long and miserable epic of the village. Alas, it was too late for me to start enjoying this book, and honestly I felt as if the author was trying a bit too hard to make the readers like the villagers, which made it simply too cheesy.

I liked the fantastical elements such as the peacock, the ring, it made the story a bit fairytale-like and I felt it gave a bit of meaning of the terrible beginning of the book. Thus giving two stars instead of one.

The "plot" could have been summed up easily. Three apples fell from heaven: one died, the earth opened up under the second one, and there was actually no third apple cause it's the famine.
