The Deep & Dark Blue by Niki Smith

4.0

This was a fast read & such a sweet story! I loved the themes of being true to who you are as well as the bond of family & friends. While we are rather thrust into the world, I did find that I didn’t need too much more world building for the story’s plot to take place. With that said, as an adult I would have loved to see more world building! Still, for someone who may be closer to the intended audience’s age I think this story had the right amount of world building for the plot.

I really felt like I could connect to the characters. The flow of the dialogue matched with the illustrations really brought these two characters to life: Hawke & Grayce. I loved the fantasy backdrop to the theme of finding who you are & accepting your true self. I love fantasy so of course I was instantly drawn in. I think other readers will be too, especially since the storyline goes quick and there aren’t any real slow spots within the graphic novel. I also really loved seeing so many adult characters showing positive support to our main characters. It was really great to see throughout the story.

This will definitely be on one of my recommend lists! This story is one to check out :)
