Cat and Bones are taking a much needed break after the events of the previous book when secrets from Cat’s past emerge to disrupt the couples’ life once again and this time it might just be for good.

Cat & Bones have never been particularly appealing to me as a couple and this book has only solidified that opinion. The first half is characterized by constant miscommunications and silly misunderstandings, tropes that are more akin to contemporary romance than urban fantasy. Thankfully, the second half returns to the actions and excitement one expects from this genre.

The story develops slowly at first with the introduction of the villain, his past history with Cat, and Bones’s reaction to events. It does ultimately pick up toward the middle and there are many twists and turns that kept me listening. Once again, it is the secondary characters that caught my interest with Vlad playing a particularly entertaining part in the story, and I am really looking forward to his spin-off.

Tavia Gilbert’s narration is very good although I’ve come to realize that her Cockney accent for Bones may just be the reason for my failure to appreciate him. It is simply too ridiculous for me to take him seriously as a sexy, all powerful vampire hero.
