Given it's a prequel and I have not read the others the book was good. You didn't need to have read the others  to know the world as you are introduced to it via the female character. I am a little unsure which age group this book was aimed at as at the start it felt like teensbaged 12 to 14 but bits of it were more 16 to 19 year olds. Hopefully this will give this series an in on the teens to come.
