Citizen Illegal by José Olivarez
5.0
Okay, I don't usually read poetry. And I guess I still don't because I listened to this collection, which I've decided is the best way to enjoy poetry.
I think the first poem in the collection is the most hard-hitting. It got my attention right from the eponymous title. It questions the identity of a child born on American soil by illegal (his word, not mine) parents. I listened twice.
I'll probably listen to this entire collection again. Perspectives so far outside my known and familiar existence fascinate and educate me. I listen to (or read) books like this for many reasons, but I hope all of those reasons lead me to be a better human being who practices compassion and embraces empathy.
