The Maze of Justice: Diary of a Country Prosecutor: An Egyptian Novel by Tawfiq al-Hakim, Tawfik Al-Hakim, Abba Eban
5.0
If there’s something that speaks to the nature of Egypt (and Egyptians) is their sense of humor. It’s unique. It’s absurd. It’s creative. And “Maze of Justice” by Tawfiq Al Hakim is hilarious. A murder occurs in a small village in Egypt. The local prosecutor has to juggle with an absurd system, corruption and uncooperative and uneducated population. My favorite character was Sheikh Asfur, who only speaks through verses of songs. .
If you love Naguib Mahfouz, like me, you’ll love Tawfiq Al-Hakim.
