My Fair Junkie: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Staying Clean by Amy Dresner

5.0

Dresner's breezy style almost belies the heartbreak that's at the core of this narrative, but it's written with enough honesty to get that across.

The book's timeline moves back and forth, interweaving her addiction, sobriety, and mystifying relapse (mysterious to people who have never had the need to get sober anyway). The skillful style means you're never lost or wondering where you are, even if at times it's clear the narrator was. But then, it's hard not to lose track of where you are in a blackout.

This is not a how-to. It's not even moralistic (whew!). It simply makes the gritty truth of addiction real, yet utterly readable.
