WOW. Just completely and utterly WOW. This is going to be a rather long review, as this book has unlocked so much inside me. I don't even know where to begin.

Straight from the get go, this book captured my interest and as it progressed it slowly captured my heart as well. I could not put it down, and it hurt to finish it. But you can bet your apples, I'll be getting my hands on the next one.

The story follows young Larkin, a Reaper who longs to be human and to be free of her master. After meeting a mortal who unlocks something in her, she denies  fate, breaks the rules and ends up making a bargain with the witch-queen of the Netherworld. Following this is a serious of fantastic and thrilling adventures that coincide with one larger story. Humanity is now at risk, and Lark must find a way to save it.

The range of characters is absolutely fantastic. You have your bad guys, each of who are at different levels and then you have your band of merry men (and women) who just make the overal story perfect in my opinion. Each of the being so unique and fantastic in their own ways. They honestly felt so real as I was reading, and I just adored the. Lark - our brave and fearless heroine. Utterly soft yet so strong at the same time. Her experiences cause her to take nothing for granted, and allow her to truly feel each and every thing. Her character is a reminder of what being human truly is, messy, chaotic, sometimes painful and sometimes full of joy. Gavriel - The adorable, grumpy assassin who just cannot prevent his little Demon from getting under his skin. In more ways than one. A tortured soul that deserves so much. Daciana - A fearless woman on the outside that keeps her cards close to her chest, but clearly cares and loves passionately. I cannot wait to find out more about our mysterious leader. Alistair - The provider of comedy, who literally had me smiling and chuckling at almost every scene he was in. Langford - Our gentle healer and scholar, who has a witty and comedic side. I really enjoyed watching his character grow. Hugo - Oh how I love him. His gentle giantness, his protective side and how he treats Lark just melted something inside me. These characters all entwined perfectly with each other, creating a strong sense of found family, trust, honour and dedication. All the little adventures they embarked on, added so many twists and turns whilst also developing the larger story just added so much depth to the book. Not to forget Ferryn of cause, who is a complicated character in the sense of I don't know whether I love him or I want to smother him currently but I cannot wait to find out.

The overall story had me on the edge of my seat, and it never played out how I thought it would - the moment I thought something would happen, Farran would flip everything upside down on the next page and keep me absolutely boombazzled and I loved every second of it. Again, the additional little adventures throughout the novel really enhanced the whole story, creating the strong focus of found family and friendship which is so key to Lark's story.

The clear examples of humanity and the importance of being vulnerable were so beautifully written throughout, really causing me to sit back and appreciate things. It was almost like, seeing the world through Lark's eyes enabled me to see the real world in a new way. A better way.

I honestly was not expecting the book to end the way it did, but it almost had a poetic justice to it. I won't divulge on that further for spoiler reasons. But it's safe to say, I NEED the next book now.

Hands down one of my favourite reads of all time. This is definitely a story I will keep coming back to.
