The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante

3.0

I loved the Neapolitan Quartet so was keen to see what Elena Ferrante would do next. We’re still in Naples and many of the themes are the same. The characterisation of Giovanna is strong but the remaining characters are less fully formed than in the Quartet. Many of the young men felt interchangeable and Vittoria, Giovanna’s aunt and such a vivid presence in the first half of the book, fades towards the end. If you haven’t already, read the Quartet. It’s marvellous.
