This is an epic story of love & loss, of family & friendship, of sacrifice & generosity, of tragedy & perseverance. I was not familiar with the plight of Jewish Italians in the 1930s & 1940s. I did not know there was a Jewish Ghetto in Italy & that nearly every single Jewish Italian sent to camps in the north perished. I enjoyed the character development, the family friendships, the detailed telling of life during that time, and that the book was written from the points of view of multiple characters. I couldn’t stop listening until the book was finished.
