What Can't Be Seen by Brianna Labuskes
5.0
In this second book of the Dr. Gretchen White trilogy we finally get to look into Gretchen's childhood and upbringing and what made her the way that she is. As Gretchen and Lauren unravel Gretchens past they are met with a roadblock known as dect. Shaughnessy. He has been watching Gretchen's every move since she was eight years old because he is convinced that she got away with murdering her aunt Rowan in cold blood- I mean she was caught standing over her aunts dead body with the bloody knife in her hand, but that's all semantics, right? I mean Lauren believes her and is Lauren ever wrong? As they dive deeper into the White family history, a decades old case comes up and it makes them really think if Gretchen really did kill her aunt in the exact way they've been saying for years, and if it's true can Gretchen live with that?
As soon as I finished book one I quickly downloaded book two with high hopes for this book and I was NOT disappointed. The story is continued so flawlessly that it could have gotten five stars for that alone, but Brianna brought so much more depth to the characters (that I didn't think was possible) that she blew me away. As you read the story you get to jump from past to present and you get to learn all of the reasons Gretchen became the way that she is. Just as you think you have everything figured out here comes a twist you wouldn't have thought of. The biggest revelation of the book is still rattling around in my head because it got me that good. Usually when characters span for multiple books I get let down at least a little by subsequent books, but these do not disappoint and get better book by book. I recommend this to everyone!
