Lucifer Book One by Mike Carey

5.0

I’m genuinely impressed by this book. I don’t know what I went in expecting but it perhaps wasn’t exactly this.

Here are excerpts of comments I made to friends after I finished it:
“I didn’t expect everything to come together as completely as it did. My head is spinning.” (Admittedly I finished reading this on a 27 C day sitting by the Hudson river waterfront so that may have been the sun)
“My toxic trait is I wish the frontal nudity shots had a penis. And then I wish that penis had been in me.” (Sorry I’m attracted to a devil with a devil-may-care attitude?)
“The show Lucifer leads more with his penis. This is not like that. Just one brief kiss and one quickly interrupted mock seduction by a beautiful woman.” (She turned out to be a murderous demon, long story)
“This Lucifer is more… beyond mortality. I don’t mean immortal.”

Disclaimer: This has some dark themes. There was a
Spoilerscene of homophobic violence set against a backdrop of fascist groups
. Not a single scene or character or arc is wasted within the book so I won’t say it was gratuitous, but it was still uncomfortable. There is a lot of death in this book. The book is also not “funny”. It’s entertaining, yes, but it involves elaborate serious topics treated as such feat. Lucifer’s trademark wit and smarts.

I was fairly surprised at how long it took me to read this. Information and panels are quite densely packed and it felt very much like reading a “real book”. But completely 100% worth the higher-than-average-graphic-novel-effort that it required. I highly highly recommend.
