The Fire Between High & Lo by Brittainy C. Cherry
3.0
This book started out so promising and I was so excited to read it after loving The Air He Breathes.
Young Logan and young Alyssa’s story was written so heartbreakingly beautiful and set up what could have been an epic second-chance romance.
And then... I was sadly disappointed. I love characters that are survivors; characters that have weathered storms without breaking and then come out even stronger for it. Logan had so much potential to be that, and I would have loved to see Alyssa be the force of that change. But honestly, Alyssa was a doormat heroine and nothing about that appeals to me whatsoever.
Hero came back after 5 years of radio silence and heroine doesn’t give him any shit at all and is ready to let him straight back into her life. If Logan did a bit of groveling or apologizing it may have made up for her lack of self-respect, but instead he continued his asshole streak with Alyssa while simultaneously using her to feel better. Selfish much? The only character I think I kind of liked was Lori, who literally saw how wrong Logan was treating Alyssa and told him to stop, but selfish man that he is, he decided the best thing (again, for him and not for Alyssa) is to just be friends since he claimed to not want to hurt her again (although how is being a jackass not hurting her?) but at the same time needing her always by his side.
Ugh talk about a let down. After coming to these realizations I basically just skimmed through the rest of the book. So much of the second half of the story centered around Kellan and Erika that the book should have really just been about them. At least Erika had a little more spine (except when she immediately forgave Kellan for all his meanness, but the guy had cancer so...free pass?)
Looking at the rating and reviews for the next two books in this series, I’ll probably still try them. But my expectations are pretty low tbh.
