The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann

4.0

I had super low expectations of this book, partly because I assumed the hype was over the author's age (16). To my surprise, I enjoyed it. His writing is mostly pretty good, and his style brings Neil Gaiman to mind in some places. The characters need a bit more depth, but I thought the idea of the steampunk age being triggered by the fae turning up in England (everyone starts using iron like crazy to keep them out) was very clever. Several characters are super creepy. I think middle grade fantasy readers will enjoy it.
