The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers, by Sinéad Gleeson

4.0

It's safe to say that there were very few short stories in this compilation that I didn't enjoy. Although there are some stories that don't align with my North American understanding of the elements/structure/etc. of a short story, overall, the stories were fantastic. It took me awhile to read this collection, but I would happily read it again! Some of my favourites were Kate O'Brien's "A Bus from Tivoli", Elizabeth Bowen's "The Demon Lover", Lia Mills's "The Crossing", Mary Costello's "My Little Pyromaniac", Molly McCloskey's "Frogs", "Nuala Ní Chonchúir's "Shut Your Mouth, Helene", Belinda McKeon's "Long Distance", Roisín O'Donnell's "Infinite Landscapes" and E.M. Reapy's "Gustavo". I highly recommend this short story collection!
