A Heavy Dose of Allison Tandy by Jeff Bishop

4.0

I received a copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley.

A Heavy Dose of Allison Tandy is a delightful, hilarious romp through love and loss. The characters feel so real, I wondered if I was back in high school. Cameron (Cam), Allison, and their friends are by no means perfect, but they are still likeable. As a goody-goody, I did not relate to their free-spirited teen ways (drinking, smoking weed, having sex, etc.). However, I understood the reasoning behind every bad choice they made, and I always rooted for the characters in the end. They are flawed in a human fashion, not a villainous one.
The plot itself is unique and well-done. Ally's sarcastic dialogue was a perfect fit for Cam's habitual lying, which is seen in the way he narrates experiences. While the ending could be described as cliché, the book is a wonderful standalone which could lead into a sequel. If Bishop decides to continue the story of these characters, I hope to be around to see it.
