Devney Perry writes stories about the heart and she’s always been a one-click author for me. This story is not as angsty as her other ones, this is sweeter, with a lot of heart but not a lot of tears. I loved the characters but there was something a little bland about the story which is why I didn’t give it my customary five stars. Yet, it is still a story from the heart and the writing and the pace were excellent.
Thea has been a fighter all her life. From the way she was born, to the way she lived her childhood and now that she’s a single mother. A one-night stand with an incredible man resulted in a surprise pregnancy and a wonderful wild child. Charlie is the heart of this story, a beautiful, sensitive, shy, and wild child with a heart as huge as she’s little. At five years old, she sounds like an old soul, very observant, more a listener than a chatterer, and loves nature, frogs and tree forts.
Thea was never able to find Logan, her one-night stand, after that night, so he missed the first five years of Charlie’s life. Then one day Logan walks into her town, the CEO of a charity foundation, who came to save the town’s summer camp and got the surprise of his life when he finds his mini-me in this beautiful little girl. She even has his crooked pinky finger!
Logan Kendrick comes from a very wealthy and ostentatious family. He didn’t want to get into the family business but he did take over the Kendrick foundation and he loves to help floundering businesses. When he finds Thea, he’s so happy because he never forgot about her and when he went back to where he met her, she had already gone. When he meets his daughter, he falls in love immediately and wants to give Charlie the world.
And here is where the problems started. Logan lives in New York, where he’s a partner in a prominent law firm, and he also leads the foundation. His family estate is set in New York and he needs to be there. He’s also a workaholic with a very busy schedule. Thea used to live in New Jersey, later on in New York and she escaped because she felt worthless there. Here in Lark Cove she finally has a family, a business that she helped raise to success, and her daughter is enjoying a healthy and free childhood. There’s no way she’s going back to the jungle and feeling worthless.
I loved how Logan gets to know Charlie and gets her to love him back. He was so careful to keep his promises to his little girl and tried to spoil her for the five years he missed. He desperately wanted to have a family with Thea and Charlie but he wanted his family to live in New York. He was so deluded in thinking he could get his way! He kept insisting on getting his way and Thea was also set on staying put.
There was a lot of heart and love in this story. Thea had the love of Hazel, who was like a mother to her, Jackson, her best friend and like a brother, and Charlie. Logan has a grandmother who was warm and loving, much more understanding than his parents. She was the one who told him he would have a lot to learn. As the story unfolded, he did a lot of learning. This book also had some skirmishes to make it interesting. But over all, it was the love for Charlie and the need to secure her happiness that made this book so heartwarming and sweet.
