You Got Me, Sempai!, Vol. 9 by Azusa Mase

4.0

Rough start; strong ending

I'm glad the marathon let's-artificially-pause-our-relationship-while-I-prep-for-college-exams story arc is over. That turned out to be a drag. Although much of this volume was slice-of-life ephemera that tread water until the next story arc, there were enough highlights to make it an enjoyable read.

Azusa Mase's artwork is loose and sketchy, which can come across as rough at times, but overall has a warm intimacy. My favorite page was the series of three panels as Serina received a text that Mizukawa had passed his exams. Her silent cheer and puzzled schoolmate's face in the middle of class was an adorable moment. Azusa's insights on love were also entertaining as a classmate discussed the facts of life about how there were two kinds of men to women: the love of their life and everybody else.

Over all, an enjoyable volume. Volume ten will feature a rival. Whether it reads as typical shoujo or not depends on how Azusa handles Serina's feelings. Mizukawa isn't the most attentive of boyfriends. You know in the end he won't lose, but you don't know how long it will take to win Serina back.
