The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

5.0

90% of The Sword of Kaigen was the one of the best books I've ever read. That last 10% was unnecessary.

There are 2 climaxes in this novel, one around halfway through which is the External/Physical Conflict. The other is the Internal/Emotional conflict which takes part around three fourths of the way through. Both of these are some of the gripping, engaging, thought provoking, and beautiful passages I've ever read. So this then leaves the last quarter, almost 150 pages as resolution?

One of the Sword of Kaigen's biggest is strengths is how well is able to create such a deep world in such a little time. However even after the main conflict has been resolved, additional world building still takes place. To the point where it feels like the entire last chapter was there to exclusively build up for a sequel that will never happen.

To me. One of the most important parts of storytelling is the build up and payoff. And when your story drags on for too long it can dilute the rest of the experience. As the ending is what will be the finals moments with the book.

This is all very nit-picky, as this book genuinely is incredible. But I still had to share what I noticed.
