Daisy Jones & The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

Daisy Jones is a gorgeous solo-artist on her way to fame and a sure death by overdose, if she keeps using. The Six is a rock group on the rise. Lead singer Billy just got clean for the love of his family, and he’s ready to live life sober in a rock and roll world. When these two forces combine, they form into a complex look at love and expression and struggle. The thing is that we KNOW this story. We KNOW how this goes- how it has to go. I started listening to the audiobook, thinking I was going to hate it when the story turned into some love story between Daisy and Billy because that sort of thing had been done before...except it hasn’t- not the way Reid does it. Reid doesn’t reinvent the wheel; she reminds us what the wheel looked like to begin with. Reid’s characters aren’t just sex-driven, drugged up rock-n-roll stars. They’re complex, funny, broken people. I loved this portrayal of bad situations and how the different band mates battled these problems. As usual, my favorite characters were the side characters. I loved Karen Karen’s story, and Judy Greer has this beautiful, high-pitched and sophisticated voice. Warren was entertaining as well. Ari Fliakos’ interpretation of this laidback, loving drummer came off as a hilarious mix of Goodfellas meets the Dude. Warren tells it how it is-not in a judgements way, but more “I’ve had a lot of time to think, and this is how I see it”. Listen to this audio-drama to hear a great cast tell an amazing story!!
