Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong-and What You Really Need to Know by Emily Oster
informative
slow-paced
3.5
Overall good book and good, although biased, information. Oster says many times that she is sharing information so that each woman can make their own decision about their pregnancy and delivery. However, 99% of the information shared tended to be in line with what she chose to do. One area I was bummed about the biased research on was acupuncture (as I work in an acupuncture focused clinic and we success on a daily basis with our pregnancy patients).
I’d suggest timing certain parts of the book better than I did. I read this very early on in my pregnancy and I’m not still ver nervous about my lack of nausea (she says lack of this symptom can be a sign of miscarriage…) and I completely had to skip the chapters on high-risk pregnancy. If certain parts make you nervous or anxious, I suggest you do the same.
Overall good information to consider. But at the end of the day, consult with your doctor/midwife and doula before you make any decisions.
