I think this is a nice book. It is a better story when read as an allegory for feminism and female emancipation as opposed to a straight-forward tale of alternate history or a honest blending of the fantastical merging with the "normal" universe. The relationships are heart-warming and the struggles, both societal (dragons and the forced-blindness of ignorance) and personal (the mother's story and conflict).
