Desperate Hours by David Mack

a quick fun read! interesting enough central plot with Starfleet ethical dilemmas. surprisingly good insight into Saru's motivations and character. at times dialogue overall ranged from robotic to cliched exclamations, but at least there wasn't the excess exposition that weighs down other Trek books -- good pacing. a few too many space battles for my tastes (I skimmed those bits), but I can see other people finding that exciting. the best part was the heart of the story -- Michael's acceptance of becoming a first officer and confrontation with her difficult history. her team up with Spock had me hooked the whole way through -- a fascinating take on their complicated relationship with each other and their family.
