Stories of the Raksura, Volume One: The Falling World & The Tale of Indigo and Cloud by Martha Wells

5.0

I wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it is. I figured it would be a set of stories that weren’t quite interesting enough to make into novels, but they work really well as shorter pieces. Since I already knew I like Wells’s Murderbot novellas better than the novel, I suspect she is one of those writers who is better at short form than long. The earlier Raksura novels are often clogged up with details I skim over- eg, who was sitting where while they eat, in a situation where it makes no difference. These are really great stories, especially “The Story of Cloud and Indigo.” Probably wouldn’t work as your first introduction to the Raksura, though. Start with Cloud Roads, but then you could do this one next.
