Deeper Than Midnight by Lara Adrian

4.0

In Deeper Than Midnight, we are finally given the chance to dive inside Hunter's mind. Hunter is a character I've been really intrigued by ever since he was introduced in Nikolai and Renata's book, Veil of Midnight. He's very different from the others in that he has never lived a normal life. He's always been a hunter, a warrior, and most of all a killer. But he's not all bad by any means, and I was so curious about him and what kind of female would cause him to soften and to feel in general.

We were introduced to Corinne in Brock's book. She was one of the breedmates that had the misfortune of being kidnapped by Dragos in order to breed with the Ancient to create an army of Gen One warriors - or "hunters", hence Hunter's self-given name. I liked her. I thought that she was a very strong heroine who, despite her situation, pushed through. Although perhaps not physically strong, it's clear that she is a very strong person to have endured everything she did over a shocking amount of years.

I really enjoyed this story. It's not my favorite Midnight Breed, but it's up there. It could just be because I've been away from the Midnight Breed world for awhile and it was nice to jump back in there. But, I thought that the romance was done really well and realistically, given both of their situations. Hunter has this really romantic side to him that might seem a little rigid, but for him is so very sweet. It was so nice to see that

But what really made this book for me is that I could truly see why Corinne and Hunter would end up together. They both went through a long period of being captured against their will, and they can sympathize with each other in that aspect. Along the same lines they are both survivors. They both do what needs to be done to protect themselves and those they care about. So I found that despite them originally seeming so different, they ended up being way more alike than I could've imagined, and absolutely perfect for each other.

Overall, this was a great Midnight Breed novel. It was nice to finally get Hunter's story. I think it could've done with a little bit more action. Lara Adrian writes fantastic action scenes and I missed that a bit in this one. Although there was some, it wasn't nearly as action packed as the previous books. Now I just can't wait to finally get Chase's story! He has been in need of some lovin' for a LONG while! :]
