Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

emotional fast-paced

5.0

i really liked convenience store woman and think about it often. i identified with keiko both on her difficulties with being “normal” and having proper reactions to situations. some characters and “society” made me angry. i also reflected on the times that i loved working at my fast food and retail jobs in undergrad. i miss those jobs sometimes and wonder if im made to work in a “convenience store.” this book is only 172 pages, so it’s a pretty quick read if you want it to be! (although it took me 10 days to get around to finishing it, i read 100 pages on one sitting). i also love almost every cover design available LOL

“keiko is trying very hard to be normal. she studies gestures, mimics inflection, composes her face. what she needs is a manual for ordinary living. instead she finds a job, and in the straight-jacket of the convenience store, she finds a kind of paradise. a reason to live.” Pageturner Cliffhanger (less)
